ShiftSpace is a gallery where even the location shifts, on occasion. Run by Wichita State University students and faculty, ShiftSpace moved into a new home on April 27, a few blocks north of its previous digs.
That night, Final Friday visitors saw the highly interactive “Wired” exhibit by the Center for Research in Arts, Technology, Education, and Learning (CRATEL).
Steve Wilson's techno-art music served as a pulsating background for art that responded to the viewers. Each art piece was created by teams that combined fine arts and engineering students. What we saw:
- A projector “mashup” that took computer pixels of painting by well-known artists and recalculated them to make new paintings.
- A light piece that changed color and intensity, depending on how close the viewer stood.
- A blue “Romeo” using sound and sensors to determine how long someone spent gazing at the piece.
- A glass-encased “ferro fluid” specimen, which used magnets underneath a slimy exterior to simulate a living organism.
