Old Town
For nearly 50 years, from the 1880s until the 1930s, the section known as Old Town bustled with activity from warehouses and hotels as a center of commerce driven by the nearby Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad line. Then for nearly as many years, it fell into ruin, forgotten by a sprawling city.
In the late 1980s, it gained designation as an historic district. Fueled by economic development from the city and years of renovations, Old Town now serves as the city’s cultural heart for arts and entertainment. Crowds go between restaurants and nightclubs every night, but Final Fridays put the emphasis on art.
