Colvin Newcomers

Wichita's Colvin Elementary School has five ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teachers and a districtwide newcomers program for youngsters who have recently moved to the United States.

Ninety-four percent of Colvin students are low-income, based on eligibility for free or reduced-price lunches. Almost two-thirds speak a language other than English at home.

Even so, recent state test scores show that Colvin students do well despite challenges. Statewide last year, only five schools with a poverty rate of 90 percent or above had a passing rate of at least 80 percent on math and reading tests.

Colvin was one of them.
